Acupuncture for Conception

Acupuncture is a very safe and effective way to prepare the body for conception.  Acupuncture and Chinese herbs increase blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, enhance egg quality, increase cervical fluid, build a healthy lining for implantation, and regulate the menstrual cycle when there are irregularities.  When the menstrual cycle is regulated, it becomes easier to predict when you are ovulating thus increasing your chances of conception.

Ideally, treatment should begin three months prior to trying to conceive in order to have the most positive impact on the maturing follicles and sperm.  In women with PCOS and oligomennorehea (irregular and long cycles), which may be accompanied by anovulation, we recommend at least six months of treatment time.  These conditions do improve with Traditional Chinese Medicine, but the treatment process takes time.

In addition acupuncture and Chinese herbs can:

  • Relax the uterus
  • Decrease chances of miscarriage
  • Reduce stress
  • Balance endocrine system
  • Improve sperm count, motility and morphology

Acupuncture can be especially beneficial in the following:

  • Fertility issues in women over 35
  • Mild to moderately high FSH levels
  • Diminished ovarian reserve
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Thin uterine lining
  • Anovulation and irregular cycles
  • Low sperm counts
  • Luteal phase defect (low progesterone levels)
  • Recurrent miscarriages
  • Poor egg quality
  • Autoimmune factors affecting fertilization or implantation
  • Unexplained infertility

Acupuncture and IVF/IUI Support

When acupuncture is used in conjunction with IVF/IUI’s it can increase pregnancy rates.  Many studies have shown that when acupuncture is used in conjunction with IVF/IUI and medicated cycles it can:

  • Increase implantation rates during an IVF embryo transfer
  • Increase pregnancy rates
  • Enhance egg quality
  • Increase ovarian responsiveness
  • Improve blood flow to the ovaries and the uterus
  • Increase the thickness of the uterine lining
  • Decrease side effects of the medications
  • Prevent miscarriage and early pregnancy loss
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improve sperm count, motility, and morphology

Ideally, we would like to see you for treatment one to three months before beginning your IVF/IUI cycle, but we understand that the timing doesn’t always align.  We can still see good results with treatment during your IVF/IUI cycle.  During your cycle we will incorporate evidence-based protocols along with personalized constitutional treatments to optimize your outcome.

A typical treatment plan consists of acupuncture once a week while you are in the suppression phase.  Then twice a week while on stimulation medications.  Then a treatment pre and post transfer.  We recommend a treatment 5-7 days post transfer to further assist in implantation. When there is a positive pregnancy test, we recommend weekly treatments throughout the first trimester to prevent miscarriage and to stabilize and nourish the pregnancy.
