How Acupuncture Enhances IVF & IUI Outcomes

Acupuncture is a powerful complement to assisted reproductive technology. When used in conjunction with IVF, IUI, and medicated cycles, research shows that acupuncture can meaningfully increase pregnancy rates and support your body through every phase of the process. At Family Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine evidence-based protocols with personalized constitutional treatments to give you the best possible outcome.

What Can Acupuncture Do When Used with IVF & IUI?

Many peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated that acupuncture used alongside IVF, IUI, and medicated cycles can:

  • Increase implantation rates during an IVF embryo transfer

  • Increase overall pregnancy rates

  • Enhance egg quality

  • Increase ovarian responsiveness

  • Improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus

  • Increase the thickness of the uterine lining

  • Decrease the side effects of fertility medications

  • Prevent miscarriage and early pregnancy loss

  • Reduce stress and anxiety throughout the process

  • Improve sperm count, motility, and morphology

When Should I Start Acupuncture Before My IVF or IUI Cycle?

Ideally, we recommend beginning treatment one to three months before your IVF or IUI cycle begins. This preparation period allows us to optimize your overall reproductive health, improve egg and sperm quality, and ensure your body is in the best possible condition before your cycle starts. That said, we understand that timing does not always align — and we can still achieve meaningful results when treatment begins during your cycle.

What Does an Acupuncture Treatment Plan Look Like During IVF?

We tailor every treatment plan to the individual, but a typical protocol during an IVF cycle looks like this:

Suppression Phase

One acupuncture treatment per week to support the body, reduce stress, and prepare for stimulation.

Stimulation Phase

Two acupuncture treatments per week to enhance ovarian responsiveness, improve blood flow, and manage medication side effects.

Embryo Transfer

A treatment before transfer and a treatment immediately following transfer to relax the uterus, support implantation, and reduce anxiety.

Post-Transfer Support

We recommend an additional treatment five to seven days after transfer to further support implantation and nourish the uterine environment.

First Trimester Support

Following a positive pregnancy test, we recommend weekly treatments through the end of the first trimester — up to week 14 — to help prevent miscarriage, stabilize the pregnancy, and support your body as it adjusts to the early stages of pregnancy.

Once you receive a positive pregnancy test, we recommend visiting our Prenatal Acupuncture page to learn how we support you and your baby throughout your pregnancy.

Working Alongside Your Reproductive Care Team

We are experienced in the current techniques and medications used in western fertility treatment and believe strongly in an integrative approach to care. We are happy to communicate with your reproductive endocrinologist, OB-GYN, or fertility clinic to ensure your acupuncture treatments complement and support your existing protocols every step of the way.
